Yes, KAZI has a process that includes bringing artisan representatives to the table to negotiate fairly for the artisans' time and energy. KAZI commits to providing wages that are 6-10 times more than what artisans were previously making. KAZI artisans are paid for their work upon completion of each item, long before these products reach shelves and are sold in stores.

KAZI Goods have the highest in fair wages and supply chain transparency with a certification called the Nest Seal. The Nest Seal is the highest standard for assessing artisan homeworker production and supply chains and indicates that fair wages are paid, supply chains are adhered to, that no children are in the workforce, and that the organic materials and dyes used are ethically sourced.

98% of KAZI Goods artisans are women living in rural areas across Africa, which offers less economic opportunity and activity than city centers. They're farmers, workers, care-givers, mothers, widows, wives, daughters. They're breadwinners.

Women are the backbone of the rural economy in Africa. Traditionally, they only receive a fraction of the land, credits and inputs for agriculture, as well as training and information compared to men. This leaves them either dependent on others or less educated and further behind economically. Empowering and employing women has been shown to significantly increase education levels, reduce hunger and malnutrition in children and families.

These delicately textured and handcrafted baskets were made by groups of women in intimate communities across Uganda. They use the raffia plant and banana bark to weave them together.

KAZI Goods work with artisans, predominantly women, from Rwanda, Uganda, Ghana, and Tanzania. They have talented teams of local Rwandans, Ugandans, Ghanaians, and Tanzanians working in each country who partner directly with artisans.

— How Are KAZI Products Made?

KAZI Goods artisan partners are extremely talented and weave everything by hand using locally-sourced materials native to the region. A high-quality KAZI treasure begins with locally sourced materials and resources that are accessible to weavers.

• In Rwanda, KAZI partners weave with sisal and sweetgrass.
• In Uganda, they weave with banana sticks and raffia.
• In Ghana, they weave with elephant grass.

By using local and renewable materials KAZI Goods know not only where everything comes from, but they also can create more jobs for the local material sourcers.

Cleaning

• Made of natural fibers and grass; do not submerge in water.
• If necessary, use a damp cloth to wipe or spot clean.
• After serving bread or other dried foods in a KAZI bowl, for example, turn the product upside down, then shake and tap it to release crumbs and residue.
• Avoid using chemicals or detergents.

Sun And Fading

• Due to being all natural fibers, keep dyed products out of direct sunlight for long periods to avoid natural fading.
• All natural products with little or no coloring do well in direct sunlight.

Avoid Moisture Or Temperature Changes When Possible

• If this treasure is stored for more than 2 weeks, please keep it in a temperature controlled environment, elevated off of a concrete floor, to avoid fluctuating cold and warm temperatures that could create mold.
