Free delivery to continental USA on orders over $5 $5 for orders under $50

We plant a tree with every item purchased on our store. Purchase 3 treasures & we'll plant 3 trees — offsetting carbon from shipping by reforesting lands with native flora, not quick grow tree farms.

We do this with the help of Ecologi & The Eden Reforestation Project. They partner with villages committed to restoring their forests. Reducing extreme poverty by hiring and training local villagers to plant new trees. So the entire community has a stake in the creation and preservation of their reforested ecosystems.

Care Guide

Cleaning

• Made of natural fibers and grass; do not submerge in water.

• If necessary, use a damp cloth to wipe or spot clean the basket.

• After serving bread or other dried foods in a KAZI bowl, for example, turn the product upside down, then shake and tap it to release crumbs and residue.

• Avoid using chemicals or detergents.

Sun And Fading

Due to being all natural fibers, keep dyed products out of direct sunlight for long periods to avoid natural fading.

All natural products with little or no coloring do well in direct sunlight.

Avoid Moisture Or Temperature Changes When Possible

If this treasure is stored for more than 2 weeks, please keep it in a temperature controlled environment, elevated off of a concrete floor, to avoid fluctuating cold and warm temperatures that could create mold.

About KAZI

A high-quality KAZI treasure begins with locally sourced materials and resources that are accessible to weavers. With leaves that can grow several feet long, sisal is a perfect source of the long, strong fibers needed to weave.

Found high in the mountains or low in the swampy areas, the sisal plant is scattered throughout regions across Africa.

1. Preparing The Sisal Grass

Involves a labor intensive process in which the leaves of the sisal plant are stripped, revealing the useful threads inside.

Using water to loosen them and a machete blade to separate them, weavers work to carefully break the fibers down into individual strands.

The sisal threads are then washed repeatedly until they lose their natural tint and fade to a silky white.

The white sisal now acts as a blank canvas for another important step before the weaving begins - the dyeing process.

2. Dyes

Dyes are added to boiling water brewing in large metal pots. The artisans stir and wait, ensuring fibers are perfectly infused with the dye.

When the shade is just right, the brilliantly colored fibers are hung like laundry to dry, and the construction process can finally begin.

Often, groups of weavers gather together for the dyeing process. Turning fiber dyeing into a collaborative event.

3. Weaving

The process of weaving is intricate. Sisal fibers are wound around thin bundles of sweet grass, and secured stitch by stitch into a tiny coil. The coil grows as the process continues, and the weaver incorporates differently colored sisal threads into careful patterns or designs.

Eventually, the treasure takes shape. With its brilliant hues vibrantly dyed, neat coils carefully bound, and intricate design expertly stitched - it's a labor of love. A testament to skill, and a true piece of art for your home.

98% of our Artisans are women that live in rural areas across Africa, which offers less economic opportunity and activity than city centers.

They are farmers, workers, care-givers, mothers, widows, wives, daughters. They are breadwinners.

Women are the backbone of the rural economy in Africa. Traditionally, they only receive a fraction of the land, credits and inputs for agriculture, as well as training and information compared to men. This leaves them either dependent on others or less educated and further behind economically.

Empowering and employing women has been shown to significantly increase education levels, reduce hunger and malnutrition in children and families.
